Walking into a martial arts gym for the first time can feel like a lot, whether you are a parent signing up a 6 year old or an adult who has wanted to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for years. The good news: nobody expects you to know anything yet. Here is how a first visit to Youth Martial Arts Academy works.
It starts with a free intro session
Every new student begins with a free 30 minute intro session. One of our coaches will meet with you, talk through what you or your child are hoping to get out of training, and help you choose the classes and schedule that fit your week. Then you get on the mats and try it.
There is no pressure to sign up on the spot. The point of the session is for you to get a feel for the school and see whether we are the right fit.
What to wear
Comfortable athletic clothes you can move in. A t-shirt with shorts or sweatpants is perfect. Skip anything with zippers, buttons or pockets that could catch on a training partner. Your coach will explain any uniform or gear your program uses once you decide to join, so there is nothing to buy before your first class.
What to bring
- A water bottle
- A good attitude, and a little patience with yourself
- For kids: a parent who is ready to watch, or to jump in
Arrive a few minutes early so you have time to find us, meet your coach and settle in. We are at 11670 Eagle Street NW, Suite 5, Coon Rapids, MN 55448. Look for the Suite 5 sign.
You do not need to be in shape first
This is the most common worry we hear, and it gets things backwards. Training is how you get in shape. Coaches break every technique down step by step and scale the work to the person in front of them, so first-timers train safely right next to students with years on the mats.
“Great experience going from no background in martial arts to the growth and experience my kid has gained.”Casey Stevens, parent
Which class should you try?
Kids ages 5 to 10 train in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, so there is no choice to make. Students 11 and older can try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai or MMA. If you are not sure, tell us at your intro session and we will help you pick.
